These fun songs for toddlers and young kids are not only great for using up some of their extra energy, but they also teach coordination skills and help with language development. These are great songs to use on a rainy day or during the cold months of the year when kids are typically stuck indoors, but they would also be a great addition to your daily routine.

  1. Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes - This is a classic song to teach your kids the basic body parts. After your kids learn the lyrics and actions, you can teach them to do the song really fast, really slow, or any other alternatives you can think of.

  2. If You’re Happy and You Know It - This song will encourage kids to get creative and get moving. You can replace clapping your hands with different actions such as stomp your feet, blink your eyes, turn around, shout hooray, etc. Encourage the kids to come up with their own actions too!

  3. Wheels on the Bus - We couldn’t make this list without including this song, which even toddlers can pick up on from a young age.  This is a very popular song in our house that we sing at nearly every diaper change to distract our wiggly toddler.

  4. Five Little Monkeys - Even if jumping on the bed is against the rules, this is a great song to help with gross motor development and getting wiggles out through lots of jumping. It also is a great tool to teach about numbers and counting.

  5. Itsy Bitsy Spider - This simple song is short and sweet, but can help greatly with fine motor skills. Toddlers love it and can learn to mimic the simple actions.

Next time your kids need to get some wiggles out, consider teaching them some of these fun songs. When kids move to music, they are getting so much more than just exercise. They are developing coordination, balance, language, and concentration.

Happy 4th of July!

It’s a day of barbeques, fireworks, and parades -- and you can have even more fun by teaching your little ones some patriotic songs to sing during the festivities.

Thanks to
childfun.com and famlii.com for the suggestions!

NOTE: The concept of using a familiar tune and simply inserting fresh lyrics is one to remember and use whenever you're in need of a song to lighten up a learning moment! It's called "Piggy-backing" and is just as fun as it sounds!

On the Fourth of July
(Sung to the tune of London Bridge)
It’s our country’s birthday,
Birthday, birthday.
It’s our country’s birthday,
On the Fourth of July!

Fireworks go Snap, Snap, Snap!
(Sung to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)
Fireworks go snap, snap, snap!
Crack, crack, crack!
Zap, zap, zap!
Fireworks make me clap, clap, clap
On Independence Day!

This Land is Your Land
This land is your land,
This land is my land,
From California to the New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest,
To the Gulf Stream waters,
This land was made for you and me.

Way Up in the Sky
(Sung to the tune of ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”
Wave, wave, wave the flag,
Hold it very high.
Watch the colors gently wave,
Way up in the sky.

March, march, march around,
Hold the flag up high.

Wave, wave, wave the flag,
Way  up in the sky.

The Song Scientifically Proven to Make Your Baby Happy

Thanks to thousands of British families, two child psychologists, and a Grammy award-winning artist we now have a song that is scientifically proven to make your baby happy.

Parents across the U.K. were asked to list which sounds make their babies laugh. Their responses included sneezing, animal sounds, and babies’ laughter, which are all included in “The Happy Song” by Imogen Heap.

Not only is this song scientifically proven to make babies happy, but it is approved by my one-year-old as well. Anytime she gets fussy in the car I put on this song and it immediately distracts her and makes her happy. Give it a try with your little one during playtime, mealtime, or when you are on a drive.

Music is a fantastic tool to use in all stages of parenthood. Adding a lullaby to your kids’ bedtime routine can help them wind down at the end of the day.

Listed below are some of the best songs for helping your little one relax at bedtime.

  • “You Are My Sunshine”
This is a well-known beloved lullaby and a hit song for many performers. The verses are quite melancholy, but the lyrics to the chorus are loving, memorable, and can be sung over and over again.
  • “Edelweiss”
This sweet waltz is the perfect song to lull your baby to sleep. There are many versions of this song, but this cover by JJ Heller is one of my favorites.
  • “Your Song” by Elton John
This song is my go-to song to sing to my baby girl. I can’t help but tear up when I sing, “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”
  • “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles
The melody of this song is perfect to help littles ones drift off to sleep. Sweet, uplifting, and simple. What else do you need from a lullaby?
  • “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” covered by JJ Heller
This song has lulled many babies into a golden slumber. Just don’t think about the flying monkeys and you’ll be fine. My favorite cover of this classic is, once again, by the incredible JJ Heller.
  • “Stay Awake” by Julie Andrews
Disney movies have so many songs that make fantastic lullabies. Take a tip from the incomparable Mary Poppins and use some reverse psychology to help your little ones drift off to sleep.
  • “You’ll Be in my Heart” - Phil Collins
Another Disney classic. This is exactly the message you want to sing to your kids at the end of the day.
These songs are simple, easy to remember, and can be sung by singers of all skill levels. If you aren’t feeling up to singing, consider making a playlist on your favorite audio streaming service and let the music lull your little ones into a sweet slumber.
