Commentary (by Regan Barnes) on a Ted Talk given by Dr. Sheryl Ziegler in December 2017
Dr. Ziegler presents a sad truth: many moms, regardless of circumstances, are simply not happy. The rates of maternal satisfaction have gone DOWN since the 1950s, an alarming statistic, because back then, they dreamt of what we have now: getting a good education, building our careers, freedom to own our own homes. Dr. Ziegler shares her own story along with solid information based on her therapy practice, then invites us to do a simple task on a daily basis that just might help us move from miserable to content.
Momivate is instituting programs that address this very issue, offering unprecedented connection between mothers to ward off the depression so common among us -- just reach out!!
Sheryl Ziegler, Doctor of Psychology, shares what mothers need in their lives in order to experience happiness and help prevent loneliness and depression. The power of social connection and friendships will be explored as a key component to a mother’s well being and quality of life.
Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, is a Doctor of Psychology specializing in children and families who founded a group private practice over a decade ago in Denver, Colorado. Over the course of her practice, Dr. Ziegler has led thousands of face-to-face sessions focused on burnout in motherhood and its related issues, including anxiety, depression, and divorce. Dr. Ziegler is a familiar face on television, with appearances on both local and national news media outlets as the “go-to” family and parenting expert. In January 2018, Dr. Ziegler’s book, Mommy Burnout: How Addressing Yours Will Make You a Better Mother and Create a Better Life for Your Children (Dey Street Books) debuts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
